FedEx operates FedEx Ground routes on a contractor business model, allowing individual business owners to operate one or more routes. Each owner is responsible for obtaining and maintaining a FedEx approved vehicle, pass a background check and driving test (if the independent contract intends to act as a driver) and be approved by FedEx corporate as a qualified operator. The compensation is paid to the contractor based on number of routes owned and the miles made weekly. Various bonuses are also awarded on a quarterly basis. In addition, FedEx partially compensates route owners for fuel based on mileage driven in the defined time period and at a defined price per gallon which limits the owner's exposure to inflated fuel prices.

This type of business for sale is very unique as it requires no office or overhead costs if the owner operates the route, and very minimal overhead if multiple routes are operated. FedEx pays weekly and other additional compensation, all based on the prior weeks' work performed.
